Ready For A Tasty Stew Season

Where we live in California, this time of year is a mixed-up month for me. It’s been almost six years since we moved here to the sierras and I’m still not used to the rain and snow in June much less summer months ending by early September. This year has seemed to be the shortest summer season by far. Our tomatoes got off to a late start from the frost but they can still be found lounging in my backyard garden. The sound of the roosters crowing in the early morning by 5am is even at a rest and the light is just barely shining by 7am.

By the beginning of next month the shorter days start to end in brisk cool nights, and I’ve already started to think about Stew Season. The rain started falling lightly yesterday and I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather for the past few days so I’ve been having soups and drinking warm broths. Today, I’m feeling a little better, my energy level is not quite back to normal but I’m ready for something that’s been cooked for hours.

My favorite stew recipe is pretty simple–stew meat, some hearty red wine, potatoes and carrots, tomatoes from the garden, and whatever herbs I have on hand. There’s really something about all of those ingredients simmering together that creates the most flavorful comforting meal. On my last Freezer Cooking Day, I made a few freezer bags of stew fixings and froze them. When I’m ready to throw them in the crock pot, I simply defrost in the fridge, and toss all ingredients in the crock pot, set on low for 8-10 hors and by dinner, we have a nice comforting meal.

Are you looking forward to Fall Months? What’s your favorite part of this  season?
