Want a peek into our family’s grocery budget? Here’s my March Grocery Shopping Healthy With A Budget for a month, stocking up feeding my family healthy.
Hello friends! Happy Saturday! It’s raining here and has been since yesterday. Which makes for the perfect meal prepping day. I’ve got 24 meals to prep, put away and clean up before our son needs the kitchen to prepare his class project of making a 3-course meal for the family. As promised from my post yesterday on my March Monthly Meal Plan, here are the results of my March Grocery Shopping Healthy with a Budget.
March Grocery Shopping Healthy with a Budget
Yesterday, I managed to tackle all the major grocery shopping at Walmart for the month coming under budget and I even convinced the hubby to tag along this time. It was a win-win for me! I will start sharing how I shopped for groceries for my family each month, what deals I found, and my running total of how we’re sticking to shopping healthy on a budget for groceries.
Here’s the rundown of my shopping for the month yesterday. As you read, keep in mind that I’m shopping for four people (two adults, one teenage boy and a pre-teen girl).
My grocery shopping profile:
- I’m feeding four people and prepping for double recipes.
- I’m shooting for a budget of $467. I’ve tested, planned and learned this amount works well for my family living in Northern California without starving ourselves.
- I’m trying to feed us mostly unprocessed foods, with “healthier” foods thrown in and a junk cheat food splurge* here and there.
- I no longer use coupons on a regular basis, but I do take advantage of the grocery store rewards programs and use apps like Ibotta, Shopkick, etc to earn cash back.
- Even though I have major grocery stores with 5 miles of us, I drive an hour a way to shop at Walmart for the best deal
- We eat at home. All our meals are home cooked. We eat out as a family on average once every four months if that.
- For the next 10 months, I’m saving for our family’s annual New Year’s vacation. Every penny saved counts. All cash back earned goes into the vacation account.
I purchased all the ingredients that I needed for my 24 crock pot meals and believe I’ll have extra for maybe 2 to 3 more meals. Added more to my emergency food pantry and bought all the ingredients our son needs for his Honduran meal he’s making for us tonight. I also took the time to price each item that was on my list to refer to in my future grocery shopping trips. Healthy Shopping Tip:STICK WITH WHATS ON YOUR LIST- At least 10% of the groceries in our cart at the end of our shopping trip comes from adding additional food that is NOT even on your list, nor necessary.. extra snacks and so on!
Typically, I don’t usually purchase all the types of meat that you see pictured. We usually stick to chicken and turkey meat. However, if portioned out correctly I believe you can add in other types of meat or lean meats as long as you don’t eat them too often. Healthy Shopping Tip: PORTION CONTROL- If you are eating the correct portion, you are most likely eating half of what you usually do. No need to eat 2 and 3 servings at a time… small, frequent meals will keep your metabolism going strong throughout the day!
I could give you the breakdown of each grocery item that I purchased, however that would make an extremely long post so I’ll just share my total and savings.
March Grocery Shopping Healthy With A Budget Results
Monthly Total Spent on Regular Food Items: $300.00
Total Spent on Emergency Pantry Foods: $77.74
Under budget by: 89.26
Vacation Savings since the end of June 2015:$2,669.71 Amount Remaining: $1,071.87
Healthy Shopping Tip: Commit to sticking with what you have at home… even if you want something different, use the ingredients you have at home and make something different… Save that meal for when you make your next trip! I promise you, it will save you TONS! We have a ton of food at the moment and it should last for the whole month with the exception of running to the store for more fresh produce items.
My last Healthy Shopping Tip: NEVER GO SHOPPING HUNGRY! If you go shopping with a full belly, you are less likely to give in and put those extra items in your cart!
I’m reaching my ultimate health and fitness goals by using different Beachbody programs, clean eating, and drinking SHAKEOLOGY on a daily basis to help with my nutrition. Nutrition being 80% of your weight loss, it is important to understand you cannot give 80% and then fall off on the weekends.. That will NOT get you to your goals…. What will get you to your ultimate goals is giving 100% commitment and dedication every day!
Do you grocery shop healthy with a budget monthly? I’d love to hear how it works for your family.
