Mother’s Day Blessings: Show Mom You Care By Helping Other Mothers

Posted by noelskitchen | Fundraiser Events, Improving Family Life | Friday 1 May 2009 11:23 am

In reading and following my blog, you’ll see that I have started a wonderful team of mother’s getting together to cook for a cause. Share Our Strength has provided me an opportunity to start supporting the efforts to help fight childhood hunger in America as well as my community.

When I opened an e-mail this morning from the Share Our Strength Organization I read a story that touched my heart. Did you know that one in three single Moms in the United States cannot reliably provide the nutritious food their families need to grow up healthy?

As the economic crisis deepens, the number of families in need is increasing.

In the e-mail was a story about Christina, the mother of two boys, ages 2 and 6. Christina recently lost her job. Because her food assistance didn’t make it to the end of the month, she had no food in the house. When her young boys complained of hunger, she gave them popsicles for breakfat to buy some time until she could find a more suitable meal.

“You have these beautiful children,” she explained, ” and you can’t give them what they need. It makes you feel desperate.”

In most communities, there are resources such as food pantries, summer meal sites, and after school programs that can help. But like Christina, many families don’t know about them or can’t access them.

Share Our Strength helps by bridging the gap between families like Christina’s and the programs they need in order to feed their children everyday.

Share Our Strength supports and expands the most effective programs, like nutrition education classes that help moms stretch limited dollars and free school breakfast programs that connect children at risk of hunger with nutritious food at the start of every day.

Nevada County Bakers will be at the City Wide Yard Sale in Nevada City this Saturday, May 2 from 8am-4pm selling bakery goods, coffee, hot chocolate and raffling off some goodies.  I will be handing out information about Share Our Strength as well as providing families with afforable meal solutions, recipes and more.  Sign up sheets for kids cooking workshops as well as adult cooking workshops will be avaiolable.

Please join us in the fight to end childhood hunger in our community.

You can help too, by donating today.  Visit And when you do, you can send a Mother’s Day card to the special mothers in your life. It’s a gift she will appreciate, knowing that it will help improve the lives of mothers in need in need all year long.

Thank you for your support. There is no better way to honor mothers than to help nourish America’s most valuable children.

Great American Bake Sale Nevada County: Help Support NC Bakers

As you all previously read, my team mate mom and I were doing a Great American Bake Sale event on Saturday, April 4, 2009.  I had the location picked out and started notifying everyone. Well last week the City of Grass Valley told me that we would need a Business License to do such an event. I have never heard such a thing. I told the lady in Public Works that we were doing a fundraiser to feed hungry children in our community. I wasn’t sure if this was because we were going to be baking the cookies ourselves with other moms and selling them or because I happen to mention my business on the form. I told the lady that my business was just the background part of the event; meaning I would provide handouts about teaching families how to make affordable meals in their home with budget friendly recipes. (in my business according to Section 6015 of State Board of Equalization, I do not need a business license.)

Needless to say, our event has been postponed. We are looking for a place to do the event. We have contacted a local church, farmer’s market and other facilities with no response yet. Last night we were on our local tv station NCTV. We are hoping to spread the word about this great event and hoping to get others involved. I did some reasearch and we are the only ones in our area of California trying to do this event. Children everywhere need our help. I am hoping to do this event once a month through June or July for my area.

If you would like to help support our team, you can do one of the following:

1. Make a donation at

2. Donate Baked Goods or Come with Baked Goods.

3. Buy the Baked Goods at Our Sale. (Date to Be Announced once location found)

Share Our Strength’s funding makes it possible to feed anywhere from 12 to 40 kids five days a week from early July to late August.

  • $25 could cover the cost of a 4 dish and utensil set to serve children free afterschool meals.
  • $100 could buy a food carry bag to enable organizations to deliver hot and cold meals to children.
  • $500 could cover the cost for an organization to buy a new deli slicer to prepare sandwiches for 150 children.
  • $1000 could help an organization pay for staff person to serve children meals at a meal site in the summer.

It takes one part love, one part family, one part fun and a touch of community to end childhood hunger in America. Your contribution to Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale helps to make sure that no child in America grows up hungry.

It takes more than food to fight hunger.  Join Darcie Little and I for A Great American Bake Sale Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Grass Valley Scout Lodge at Memorial Park in Grass Valley, CA. from 12:00pm-4:00pm. When it comes to childhood hunger, everyone has the strength to share.

Noel’s Kitchen Great American Bake Sale Event!

I found out about a spectacular event that takes place every Spring and I guess you could do it year round if you wanted too. I was flipping through the channels the other night waiting for dinner and I stopped at the Food Network. (One of my many inspirations for being in the kitchen all the time).

Sandra Lee was doing a commercial about a Great American Bake Sale. The lightbulb went off immediately in my head. What a wonderful idea.
Share Our Strength Great American Bake Sale, is a national campaign that mobilizes Americans to end childhood hunger by holding bake sales in their communities.

Nationally, more than 12 million children are at risk of hunger. Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale proceeds are granted to organizations in communities across America to help provide at-risk children with nutritious meals when they’re needed most-during the summer, and after school. Additionally, proceeds support Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline®, a chef-led nutrition education program for low-income families.

I signed up to do the event on April 4th. I’m so excited to be able to help the community. 100% of funds raised through my Noel’s Kitchen Great American Bake Sale will be used to ensure America’s most vulnerable children-those living in poverty and at risk of hunger get the regular, healthy meals they need, where they live, learn and play.

My goal realistically is $500. If we make more, even better. There are so many people who need a little extra help. If anyone would like to do an event of your own or wish to make a donation, visit

This is one event where I am not advertising my High Quality Kitchen Tool business but the event itself and what it stands for.

I’ll keep everyone posted on the event and the results!
