Homemade Bread, Pizza and Rolls

Posted on 06 April 2011 by noelskitchen

I try to share this “secret” with everyone who loves to cook; baking bread is fun and easy: Time-Consuming, yes, Messy, definitely, Kneading, while mentally relaxing, will tire your muscles. But difficult? No. Bread dough can be patient, flexible, and tolerant of mistakes. The rewards of fresh-baked bread are wonderful-the fragrance, the texture, the taste alone of fresh-baked bread is unbeatable.

If you have a bread machine, baking bread becomes one of the easiest tasks in the kitchen, yet it produces spectacular results. I’ve been testing out a few different recipes with different ingredients to make Homemade Bread, Pizza, Calzones and Rolls. I have finally have a recipe that doesn’t require a whole lot of ingredients and requires very little work to make all four types. Some recipes I’ve tried taste too salty but this one has just the right amount of every ingredient so they come out nice in texture and taste. Enjoy!

Homemade Bread, Pizza and Rolls

Makes: 12 Rolls, 2 bread loaves or 2 large pizza doughs

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups water (105° F. to 115° F)
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil (can also use OliveExtra Plus; which is a Canola Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil-it’s an excellent source of Omega-3 DHA)
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour *
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Kosher salt
  • 1 Teaspoon honey
  • 1 Tablespoon Bread Machine Yeast or Active Dry Yeast (I tried 2 batches with both types)
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten with 1 teaspoon water

Directions:

  • Put ingredients in bread machine in order listed.
  • Turn bread machine on dough cycle.
  • Once dough has finished cycle, remove from machine and place on a lightly floured surface. Punch down and roll into a log.
  • Cut equal portions of dough and form each piece into a roll like you would a hamburger patty.
  • Place on lightly greased baking sheet and let rise 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly brush rolls with egg wash.
  • Bake in pre-heated oven for 30 minutes or until lightly brown.

*Bread flour can also be used in place of all-purpose flour. When making wheat bread or rolls I substitute 2 cups regular flour with 2 cups wheat flour.
