The moms of previous generations may at times have faced the inescapability of dinner, just as we do, but do you think life was probably a lot gentler in the past? It certainly was structured differently. Most of the women didn’t work outside of the home, and the pace of life was a bit more relaxed. As the years have gone by, it became a fast track. A lot of today’s women have become a huge significant part of the work force inside the home and out , and now everyone is on the go.
Look at some of the jobs moms do and the hours they put in. Whether it is a job as a vice-president of a bank who works a minimum of ten hours a day overseeing bank operations, a mom in the medical field who puts in ten to twelve hour days to a mom who wakes up early, tries to throw a healthy breakfast together for her family, takes the kids to school, tries to manage the home, dinner, kids bathing time and get the kids off to bed….That’s not a lot, you say?
How do you manange and survive the daily pressures?
Schedules like these can leave little time for meal planning and food preparation. It’s no wonder why fast food is so popular. Short of hiring a cook, and a maid, is there any way out?
I would like to share a solution to this question with you. As a mother who works outside the home fourty hours a week, I learned how to plan quickly. I made a list of everything I needed, cooked and froze the food. I’ve always done it this way so that I could enjoy my family. I found that organizing meals ahead of time worked.
One day, one of my co-workers commented, “Noel, you always seem to know what you’re going to fix for dinner. You’re so prepared!” We had discussed meal planning before, but this time I sat down with her one afternoon and explained to her just how well it works and how I managed meal planning, cooking and the kitchen tools I used that made it easier. Soon after our discussion, she came into the office on Monday morning and announced proudly to me that she wasn’t going to have to worry about what to feed her family for dinner all week because she had used my plan and suggestions. Now she was prepared, and she felt good. So did I, because I had helped her and because her experience in the kitchen showed me that my approach wasn’t just fake, crazy or unrealistic. It occured to me that this approach could perhaps help other working women too.
So… I decided to write my blog and share with others in hopes that this approach will help guide them in meal planning, sharing recipes, family mealtimes, saving money and passing on those family traditions while bringing families closer together.
