Fun Thrift Store Kitchen Finds

Posted on 02 March 2013 by noelskitchen

I don’t know about you, but I love shopping at thrift stores. You just never know what treasures you might find. Even on the days when I don’t find something, I just amazed by the huge range of items. Thrift store shopping is an AWESOME way to be frugal and save some money while finding some really unique items. Plus, I can always find kitchen or gardening items on the cheap.

I always keep a list of items I’m looking for {i.e. black sweater,  plates, white serving bowl, wooden shelf, etc.}  Often times when you get into the store, it can be so overwhelming you don’t know where to start.  A list always gives me some focus.  I’ve been thrift store shopping for so long, I don’t let myself get discouraged if you don’t find all of the items on my wishlist right away.  Patience is key. Patience. You never know what fun thrift store kitchen finds you’ll see.

One of the items on my list was a dehydrator.  Unfortunately awhile back we gave ours away without giving it a second thought to what I could do with it. Silly rabbit. I don’t know what I was thinking. With some great recipes catching my eye and summer produce just around the corner, I’m finding it hard not to have one on my list.  Well after roaming the same local thrift stores for the past couple of days, I found a dehydrator.

I found this one yesterday at a thrift store for $10. It plugs in and has a heating coil at the bottom. No brand name, but I did find a model number on the inside and it turns out, it’s a Ronco 5 Tray Food Dehydrator. I found a used one that sold on Ebay for $54. The $10 I spent, may just be worth it. I also went to the Ronco website and was able to download the product manual for the dehydrator.

There are already a few things I’d like to try out: homemade jerky, fruit leather, strawberries, lemons, oranges,  sun dried tomatoes, dried chili peppers.  It’s also a great way to preserve what we’ve grown in our garden later this year.

Do you have a food dehydrator? How often do you use it?
