Build Your Pantry:Stockpiling Tips

Posted on 28 March 2012 by noelskitchen

There use to be such a thing where moms would put together a list of what was needed and go directly to the grocery store or drug store to fill their pantry with all the tings they wanted to buy.

Today, more and more moms are building their pantry by making a list based upon what’s on sale. This way of thinking can really help us trim down our monthly grocery budgets. Sometimes, you can purchase items to keep on hand in your pantry before you need them at a reasonable  good price.

Some handy stockpiling tips:

Inventory Sheet: Always clean out your freezer, fridge and pantry to always know what you have on hand. Make sure to update the list each time you pull something out or add to it.

Create Extra Space: If your home doesn’t have a lot of that extra storage space, be creative  i.e.) long platic bins or tubs can store those bathroom toiletries. A small area in the hall closet or garage can work too.

Invest in a Full-Size Freezer or Extra Fridge: One of the best investments we did at the end of last year was put an extra fridge/freezer out in our garage. It allows me to stock up on meats and veggies when their on sale and store a lot of my make-ahead meals.

Know what staple items your family uses: It makes no sense to start creating a stockpile on items your family doesn’t use on a routine basis unless you plan to donate those items. Keep a stockpile of only items your family will use. You can start by making a list of staples your family uses and build it from that. You’ll save a lot more!

Weekly Menu Plan, Grocery List and Recipes:Cooking From The Pantry

Posted on 23 January 2012 by noelskitchen

The menu for the week shares easily prepared recipes made directly from the pantry. We all have experienced when our pantry is overstocked or there is meat in the freezer that you need to defrost and cook. Many times I’ve been tempted to try new recipes and go out for new ingredients, but I’ve learned to manage the kitchen to shop and cook from my pantry to use those ingredients before they expire or go bad.

Cooking from the pantry is an excellent way to get meals on the table when time is short and you can’t get to the store, when dinner ideas have dwindled or if an unexpected supper has to be whipped together.

Cook From The Pantry

Cooking from the pantry, leads you to lots of home cooking and creativity. You also control how much you spend on groceries. An organized, well-stocked pantry  is the first step, but once that’s established, creative, delicious dinners are just minutes away.

Menu Planning To Eat Well And Spend Less

Posted on 18 November 2011 by noelskitchen

If you’re new to meal planning and cooking, you might find some comfort in knowing that  sometimes getting dinner on the table quickly, can worry even the best of cooks. So don’t feel like you have to go run in the closet and hide. Meal Planning is so important to eating well and spending less. When you have nutritious food in your home, you feel good about what you and your family are eating.

What do you do when dinner has to be on the table quickly, and you’ve been caught unprepared?

Other than skipping dinner or snacking on whatever’s lurking in the fridge-neither of which are healthy options and if you have children to feed-there are a few viable alternatives. If you have time to shop but not to cook, the easiest instant dinners are available at your super market for the buying, but they are expensive. Nearly every major supermarket offers a full case deli and bakery, and you can probably find a salad or two and some crusty bread that will do as dinner.

Your second option is turning to those frozen convenience foods-you know, frozen pizzas, pot pies, lasagnas, burritos and the like. As with the first option, this of course has its pluses and minuses. The plus is that they meals are considered one hit wonders: just heat and eat. The minus is that while you can zap one or two dinners in the microwave-which requires upwards of 30 minutes. If you had 30 minutes to make dinner, you probably wouldn’t even be bothering with frozen foods, would you? And then there’s the cost factor, too. While frozen pizzas are on the inexpensive side, in the long run,  it’s cheaper to make your own.

Eating Well

The third option, and the one we’re all here for, is making dinner at home.

This, however, takes planning, both in long term and short term. For starters, you need a decently stocked kitchen. You can’t make something out of nothing. Right? Shop around for brands of canned beans, spaghetti sauce and other quick-dinner bases. See my Quick Staples for suggestions. (If you have a little bit of time on the weekends, make your own and freeze.)

First, you have to develop a new way of thinking about your family meals. If you can’t seem to get yourself to plan a week, two weeks or a month ahead, think about dinner early in the day. Try to decide what to have while you’re getting ready for work in the morning or getting the kids ready for school. If nothing else, you can grate some cheese or put on a pot of rice. That way you’ll at least have part of dinner ready when you get home. Take those baby steps to meal planning. Eventually you’ll grow to find it’s much easier to take those big steps to meal planning.

Spending Less

With the rising costs of heating our homes and driving our cars, we have to look for ways to save a few bucks. The food budget is the easiest place to start. A little menu planning can go a long way toward feeding your family and saving money.

Coming up, I’ll share with you meals that are as close to instant as physically possible that will allow you to Eat Well and Spend Less…..

Top 10 Pantry Essentials For Every Kitchen

Posted on 17 January 2009 by noelskitchen

shopping_cartHaving a household of six, I found that grocery shopping costs were adding up and I was running out of meal planning ideas. I recently found these top 10 pantry items were essential in my meal planning and I could stretch my menu ideas further and they made it easier on my budget.  I’ve listed them here, so next time your at the store remember: by adding these pantry staples to your grocery list you can save money and stretch your food budget.

  • Produce: Onions, Celery and Carrot

These produce items will last long properly stored in a cold refrigerator. Carrots and Celery can last a month in the refrigerator. Buying unpeeled carrots will save you money.

*Tip#1 Celery can be brought back to life by placing in cold water with a little bit of white vinegar.

*Tip#2 Never store your onions near your fruit. Onions give off a gas that rippens fruit quickly.

  • Chicken

Buying a  chicken from a wholesaler in large quantities can save you money. The key is to separate the chicken when you get home into usable portions. Bag it in a freezer bag and thaw as you need it. Chicken should always defrost overnight in your refrigerator.

*Tip #1: Boneless, skinless breasts are convenient but they cost more than other parts. Consider buying chicken that is not skinless to save money. Trim the fat yourself.

*Tip#2: Need cubed chicken for a recipe? If you cut meat frozen, it’s safer and easier slicing.

  • Frozen Vegetables

Don’t worry that you’re losing nutrients by cooking frozen, rather than fresh vegetables. They’re just as good and usually as flavorful. The difference is that frozen vegetables are cheaper than their fresh counterparts and they’re convenient.  Store brand is cheaper than name brand and you can’t tell the difference in the taste.

Tip#1: Broccoli is one vegtable that does not freeze well. You can buy fresh whole broccoli on sale, just check the grocery store ads.

  • Block Cheese

Now this is one of my favorite pantry items. My daughter loves cheese and there is so much you can do with it. Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, Quesadillas, Tacos, Cheese and Crackers, Spaghetti, Casseroles and more. Shred cheese yourself to save money. Buying the pre-shredded cheeses maybe convenient, but if you’re willing to shred as you go, you’ll get twice the cheese for your money.  Buying block chedder and Parmesan are the most versatile in cheeses.

Tip#1: Buy placing the cheese in the freezer 15 minutes before you shred, the cheese will shred easier and won’t make a clumpy mess.

  • Beef, Chicken, Vegatable Broth, Stock

Broths are made from bones and meat off a carcass. Stocks are made from roasting bones. Both are great for making recipes go further and they add flavor to things like soups. My grandmother always mafe her own broths, stocks and gravies from scratch and they taste so much better.

  • Ground Beef

Buying the 20% lean ground beef is perfect for most recipes and is more affordable than many of the lower fat meats. If you buy in bulk like the family paks you are making a huge savings in your food budget. When I get home, I section the meat into usable one-pound segments and freeze in an airtight freezer bag.  If I know I’ll be making a meal that may require more, I’ll freeze an extra 1/2 pound in one freezer bag. Always thaw your meat overnight in the refrigerator.

  • Rice

Rice like pasta is another way to bulk up your recipe. Many times I will be low on meat or chicken and add rice or pasta to make my serving portion larger.  Rice will last much longer if stored in an airtight container.

  • Unsalted Butter

Now this is a first for me. I was always buying salted butter, never thinking wait a minute I can add salt later to my dish and in a quantity that I wanted and a much healthier quantity.

  • Canned Tomatoes

Canned tomatoes last longer and are cheaper than fresh tomatoes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with canned tomatoes.

  • Eggs

The last pantry essential is eggs.  Eggs are always on sale at the grocery store. Just remember to check for cracks before you put them in your cart. Eggs make a perfect meal and if you don’t feel like cooking a big meal for dinner, eggs are not just for breakfast. Eggs will last a long time in your refrigerator.
