Saving Time In The Kitchen:Planning and Work Ahead

Posted on 10 February 2012 by noelskitchen

Lots of recipes I share are excellent time-savers, but there are many tricks and techniques  for busy families that can save you even more time in the kitchen-from the way you organize your kitchen to shortcuts that minimize those dreaded cleanup chores.

Kitchen Planning and Working Ahead

One key to saving time in the kitchen is to have a place for everything. Arrange your utensils for your convenience according to the type and amount of use they get. If you have a smaller kitchen or it’s not functionally designed, invest in a few inexpensive kitchen organizers– a pegboard(for your weekly menu), a spice rack (to organize your spices so they are easily accessed), or drawers that can be attached to the bottom of a wall-hung kitchen cabinet.

Be sure to keep your refrigerator just as organized as your kitchen cabinets, pantry and drawers. Designate spots for such items like the mayonnaise, salad dressings, milk and juice that you already have on hand. Maintaining a refrigerator that’s organized and clean, not only saves on time but also cuts down on wasting food.

Efficient kitchen tools are important too. Always make sure your knives are sharp and your kitchen appliances in good repair. (You can take your knives to your local kitchen store and they can sharpen them for you. And be surer to always send in those warranties on your kitchen appliances.) Cutting up a chicken can be a 10-minute job with a sharp knife and kitchen shears or a 20-minute hassle with dull knives. You can keep your knives well honed by running them over a sharpening stone once or twice every time you use them.

Homemade Cleaning Recipes: Laundry Soap Detergent

Posted on 04 February 2012 by noelskitchen

Making homemade cleaning products to use in your home is very easy to do. It simply takes a little bit of effort. It’s so easy to go to the grocery store and spend $12-$24 on a name brand laundry detergent like Tide or Cheer but is it cost effective? Not to mention all the unknown chemicals your washing your clothes in. With 3 simple ingredients found in your local grocery store you can make your own laundry soap detergent for less.

When I was researching online for laundry soap detergent recipes, I came across a few different ones suggesting using Fels-Naptha soap. Since it was my first time, making laundry soap from scratch, I used Fels-Natha. That’s the yellow color ingredient you see leftover in the mason jar from my previous batch. Then I found out you can use practically any bar soap of your choice. So On my next batch, I just added it to my previous one. If you normally use another type of  bar soap then you can use it.

When washing a load of laundry, I use about a 1/4 cup laundry soap detergent. Please be aware that this laundry soap detergent does not make your wash machine fill with soap suds so don’t think it’s not working or you haven’t used the right amount of ingredients.  If you don’t see suds, that’s alright. It’s the ingredients in the soap that matter, not the suds.

Homemade Laundry Soap Detergent

With just these 3 simple ingredients, you can have laundry soap detergent, plus great cleaning products that are not harmful to the family. (I make 2 batches at a time which will fit into 1 24-ounce mason jar with a little left over which is added to another jar.)

Makes: Approximately 24 ounces

Ingredients:

  • 1 55-ounce box Arm & Hammer all natural Super swashing Soda
  • 1 4lb 12-ounce box 20 Mule Team Borax
  • 1 5 1/2-ounce bar Fels-Naptha laundry bar soap (or whatever bar soap you like –Dove, Ivory, NuSkin  etc)
Directions:
  • Shave 1 bar of soap. (I use my Micro-plane adjustable grater from Pampered Chef or a simple hand grater would work fine too.)

  • Add 1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
  • Add 1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
  • Stir ingredients together until they have a powder consistency.
  • Store in a mason jar or container type with a lid.

There you have it. Simple, Easy and Affordable.

Homemade Cleaning Recipes From The Pantry

Posted on 05 January 2012 by noelskitchen

Can you believe how much household cleaning products cost? Even the cost of laundry soap is getting to be outrageous. One of my new year resolutions is to stay away from those harsh household cleaning products.  Instead, I’m making my own. For the price of one kitchen or household cleaning product, I could make 5 or more spray bottles of cleaner with everyday kitchen items that are stored right in my pantry.

I’m sure there are a lot of you who say white vinegar doesn’t smell too pleasant and you’re right. But you can make it smell better by adding a little lemon juice for a citrus scent or organic essential oil of tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus, lemongrass and rosemary. (Note:I wouldn’t recommend adding any of these to your coffee maker when cleaning the actual maker.) These are all good choices to use. You can make homemade cleaners can smell better and work just as well. It also cuts down on packaging, and saves you money. Lastly, this is a very simple green step you can take at home, yet the rewards are extremely huge – cleaner indoor air quality and a healthy, happy family.

Household Cleaning Recipes From The Pantry

Here are some recipes I’m already starting to use:

Tea Tree Treasure
Nothing natural works for mold and mildew as well as this spray. Your windows can sometimes get a lot of condensation on your windows in the bedroom or bathroom during the winter or if fresh air is not aloud in the rooms on a routine basis.  Tea tree oil is expensive, but a little goes a very long way. Tea tree oil  has a very strong smell, but it will dissipate in a few days.

2 teaspoons tea tree oil
2 cups water

Combine in a spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Makes two cups.

Vinegar Spray
Straight vinegar reportedly kills 82 percent of mold. Pour some white distilled vinegar straight into a spray bottle, spray on the moldy area, and let set without rinsing if you can put up with the smell. It will dissipate in a few hours.

Window Wash
This is one I’ve been doing for years-Simply mix 3 tablespoons vinegar with 2 cups of water (or for a bigger job – 1/2 cup vinegar to 1 gallon water) and spray right on your windows. Vinegar works great on glass, it’s true, however I can’t stand the smell of vinegar, so I add lemon juice. But I read you can also use straight fresh lemon juice or club soda to get your windows and other glass items sparkling clean. Spritz your glass with club soda and scrub with recycled newspaper. If you use straight lemon juice use a lint-free cloth to scrub with.

Furniture Polish
I tried this one over this past weekend and it works great! Grab a lemon out of your fridge and squeeze the juice out of it. If you don’t happen to have a lemon, then grab a container of lemon juice and pour out about four tablespoons into a small spray bottle. Mix the lemon juice with three tablespoons water and two teaspoons olive oil. Put the sprayer in the bottle and shake well. You now have an excellent homemade furniture polish. Anytime you want to polish your furniture, you should make a new batch, as the olive oil may become rancid if you only polish your furniture once a month. When I use homemade furniture polish, I use a soft terry cloth instead of paper towel. The cloth just seems to give a better shine to the furniture.

Homemade Spot Remover
Mix white vinegar and baking soda together to form a paste. Then, work the paste into the carpet stain with an old toothbrush, or something similar. Allow the paste to dry; then vacuum up the baking soda, and the stain should be gone. Note: Some stains may need to be treated more than once.

Degreasers
I mixed up a vinegar degeaser-one part white vinegar and one part water into a clean spray bottle and add two or three drops of dishwashing liquid to form. It’s inexpensive and mixture is safe around food preparation …areas and there are no environmental concerns to worry about. This degreaser can even be used to clean cutting boards and other kitchen equipment without the worry of food contamination. Spray the degreaser on the surface, wipe down with a clean towel and rinse with water. (I always like to add a few drops of lemon juice for a citrus smell.)

ALL-PURPOSE SPRAY CLEANER
1/2 teaspoon washing soda
A dab of liquid soap
2 cups hot tap water

Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake until the washing soda has dissolved. Apply and wipe off with a sponge or rag.

CREAMY SOFT SCRUBBER
Simply pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda into a bowl, and add enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge, and wash the surface. This is the perfect recipe for cleaning the bathtub because it rinses easily and doesn’t leave grit. Note: Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin to the mixture and store in a sealed glass jar, to keep the product moist. Otherwise just make as much as you need at a time.

Fast non-toxic oven cleaning
You don’t want to use conventional oven cleaners – any product that requires open windows and gloves to use, is not ok to use around your kids (or yourself). The best tip is to not wait to clean your oven when it gets dirty. An old stain is harder to clean. To clean oven stains naturally, sprinkle table salt liberally on the hot spill before your oven cools down. Allow the oven to cool. Grab a damp cloth and rub off the spill.

Got questions? Go ahead and ask in the comments. I haven’t bought conventional household cleaners in a couple of months, and plan on researching and testing out new homemade cleaning recipes and sharing them with you. So if you need a natural homemade cleaning solution, I can most likely help you out!

Have a Homemade Cleaning Product you use that works? Please feel free to share in the comments.

Thanksgiving Ad

Stock The Pantry This Thanksgiving Week

Posted on 22 November 2011 by noelskitchen

Hopefully, you’ve browsed your local grocery store ads this past week for the great deals to be found this week. I was a little late in browsing all the ads but I came out with some great grocery store finds. I had to run to the store for some items and while I was there decided to do a quick browse to see what Save Mart (used to be Albertson’s where we live) ad on sale for Thanksgiving.  Last year if you spent $99 at Save Mart customers received a Free turkey. This year, turkeys were on sale for just $.049 a pound if you spent $25 . Limit 2. How could I refuse?  That’s one for Thanksgiving dinner with plenty of leftovers and another one for the freezer to cook up any time. I also picked up some cans of cranberry sauce and pumpkin which were also great deals and added to my $25 purchase.

A few weeks ago, we spent a little over $300 at Kmart (trying to Christmas shop) a few weeks ago and received a bunch of those coupons that come out of the machine. Come to find out if you spent over $250 there, you receive the coupons. If you received 5 turkey coupons, customer service issues you a check for $11 from Butterball between 11/16-11/23 to put towards your turkey or Thanksgiving items. Yesterday, I popped into Raley’s and pick up $11 worth of Thanksgiving food items to stock the pantry. Experience tells me that if I wait to purchase these items after Thanksgiving, the shelves will not only be empty but I’ll be dealing with an unwanted crowd. We all know how it is to take a family shopping on Black Friday.

Browse your ads carefully

No matter where you are shopping, be sure to browse your ads carefully. There are always good deals to be found to stock the pantry. When the cashier hands you your receipt and checkstand coupons, be sure to look at those. Those coupons may come in handy. Next time I spend $10 at Raley’s, I get a roll of paper towels for free. Who doesn’t need paper towels. Black Friday is just around the corner, this week’s paper is sure to have some great deals. Review them and have an action plan in place before you jump into that craziness. If you don’t, you’ll find yourself full of the anxiety and overspending that can happen this time of year.

What sales have you found? Any stock up sales you’re excited about?
